Indian Point Marine Farms Ltd.
Naturally Grown, Naturally Good

History

Indian Point Marine Farms Ltd. started mussel farming in 1982. Our original plant was a converted store in the village of Indian Point and we began with four small leases that we still farm, tucked among the islands of Mahone Bay off Indian Point. A fire destroyed our original plant in 1990 and at that time we built our present facility along with a new wharf. We have expanded our operation somewhat and now farm on seven leases, all in the same general area. About ten years ago, after a visit to New Zealand we became the first mussel farmers in Canada to use the continuous long line system with its efficiencies in labour and time. At that time, we also bought our new mussel barge, built in Nova Scotia, with innovations that allow us to grow mussels better and that also save on human wear and tear. We continue to look for ways to do our work better and at present are focusing on sustainability and minimizing our impact on our marine environment.
